PROPOSED LEGISLATION
H.R.503 / S. 727 Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act
On January 14,2009 the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act was introduced to the 111th Congress by Rep. John Conyers and Representative Dan Burton. On March 26,2009 Sen. Mary L. Landrieu introduced the bill to the Senate. To date, the bill has 150 cosponsers in the House of Representatives and 18 in the Senate.

> H.R. 503/S.727 prohibits the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States and the export of slaughter horses to Mexico and Canada. While the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act had the same goals, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act is more likely to pass because it is a much simpler approach, it only amends existing legislation. (Chapter 3 of title 18, United States Code)

Please urge your US > Representative or Senator to support and cosponsor H.R.503/S.727
Thank you!

H.R. 305 Horse Transportation Safety Act of 2009
U.S. Representative Mark Steven Kirk (R-IL) and U.S. Representative Stephen Cohen (D-TN) have introduced this bill on January 8,2009. > HR. 305 would prohibit the transport of horses in double deck trailers.
These trailers are designed for shorter animals such as cows and pigs, however, they are commonly used to transport horses as well. Because of the trailer’s design, horses are forced to hold their heads low during the entire transport, causing them to hit their heads, being trampled, injured or worse die. In addition, the trailers are unsafe due to their high center of gravity and are prone to turning over. In recent years, several tragic accidents have occurred, in which the double deck trailers transporting horses have tipped over with devastating consequences. The horses suffer tremendously during transport on such trailers.
